UPS announced it is installing beacons on vehicles to track whether or not packages via beacons.
have been put inside the wrong truck. UPS is calling the program "Preload Smart
Scan." It will be one part of a larger rollout to impart technology throughout the
delivery operation that UPS is calling its UPS EDGE (Enhanced Dynamic Global Execution) program. The Bluetooth-enabled beacons (provided by Zebra Technologies, Lincolnshire, Illinois)
will communicate with scanners that UPS employees have on them when loading up packages.
The beacon will signal the device if a package is wrongly loaded. UPS says the system will reduce wrongly loaded packages by 70%. The carrier also announced a new Packaging Innovation
Center in Louisville, Kentucky, to test and discover ways to solve shipping challenges for e-commerce retailers.
