n a way, online shopping is like a job interview or dating: Marketers don't get a second chance to make a
first impression. That's the approach brands and retailers should take when building e-commerce solutions
for maximum impact, says Rob Gonzalez, co-founder
and vice president of business development at Salsify.
"Studies suggest that consumers now start their product searches within Amazon more often than on Google,"
says Gonzalez. "It's critical for a marketer to be in the
top tier of search results, particularly on a mobile device.
Once a consumer sees your product, the impression you
make and how you comport yourself as a brand in those
few moments is the whole ballgame."
The quality of content (e.g., product images, descriptions) is the single most important driver of online clickthrough rates and sales, says Gonzalez. For too long, he
says, CPG brands have failed to think of e-commerce logistics, such as updating product detail pages on retailer
websites, as a strategic part of their overall marketing.
That attitude has changed significantly in the past year
or two, says Danny Silverman, senior vice president of
e-commerce at Clavis Insight. "Marketers recognize the
impact that e-commerce has on all offline sales," he says.
"It's well documented how much product research starts
on a retailer website versus a search engine, and the
growing percentage of total retail sales that are impacted
by some kind of online engagement, whether it's digital or
e-commerce."
Given the ongoing challenges of data sharing between
retailers and manufacturers, marketers are increasingly
turning to third-party providers like Clavis Insight for data

and analytics support. Such firms are known for harvesting data (also called "crawling" or "spidering") from
retailer websites in order to measure the accuracy and
performance of a brand's content - including search
results, titles, product descriptions, images and ratings
and reviews - relative to its competitors.
Based on advice from the above experts, here are five
ways that marketers can optimize their online presence
and build more strategic e-commerce solutions:

Help shoppers achieve their mission in the shortest
time possible by ensuring the completeness and accuracy of listings.
n
When managing a product detail page, use as many
secondary images as possible and employ actionoriented descriptions. For example, a facial moisturizer might suggest "contains aloe to help your skin feel
softer" rather than simply "contains aloe."
n
Know the kinds of specific information that online
shoppers are looking for in your category. Populate
an e-commerce page with callouts, product recommendations and other information that is contextually
relevant to that site.
n
Key words are essential to driving search results.
Such basic descriptors as "sensitive" in the sensitive
toothpaste category are often left off a search result or
product detail page.
n
Apply proven retail merchandising tactics in the online space. For example, consider creating an online
version of a seasonal endcap display using product
recommendations geared toward a specific usage occasion or holiday.
