counseling such as Pharmacy Advisor, Specialty Connect and Maintenance Choice, as
well as a low-cost generic drug option.
Target officially shut down its Pharmacy
Rewards program on Dec. 1, 2015, softening the blow by saying goodbye to members with 5% off coupons. All Target pharmacy shoppers were automatically moved
to CVS' network; all pharmacy and clinic
staff members are now employed by CVS
and no longer wear red and khaki.
"[The partnership] with CVS Health is an
important step in driving Target's strategic
priorities forward while giving our guests
easy access to industry-leading healthcare
services," said Brian Cornell, chairman and
CEO of Target, in a media release. "With
the transition now underway, Target can
further accelerate our commitment to
wellness as a signature category, helping
guests and team members in their efforts
to eat better, be more active and find natural and clean label products."
Target will focus on other priorities that
have taken on more urgency such as the
highly competitive grocery business. Prod-

ucts and experiences that help consumers
"eat well, be active and find natural and
clean label products" will continue to be
a strategic focus. "By partnering with CVS,
we will offer our [shoppers] industry-leading healthcare services, and at the same
time, sharpen our focus on elevating the
way we deliver wellness products and experiences," Cornell said in an earlier release.
"The health care business is exceedingly complex, and Target's primary business is selling consumer goods, not prescriptions," said Steve Frenda, the Path to
Purchase Institute's managing director of
strategy and development. Frenda points
to negative pharmacy business results in
the company's last fiscal year.
Target brought in just $4.2 billion in
prescription revenue last year. CVS/pharmacy, meanwhile, posted $83.2 billion in
prescription revenue in 2015. CVS shelled
out $1.9 billion for the right to plant itself
in Target stores.
Merlo called the deal a "win-win" for the
companies. "In this environment, success is
all about effectively managing cost, quality
and access," Merlo said during a company call. "This strategic relationship brings
together two leading organizations with
complementary strengths, brands and culSM
tures."
