company eyeQ Inc., Austin, Texas, has
developed emotion-sensing displays.
For example, a display they call the
"Beer-o-Meter" shows a mug of beer
that fills up as a consumer smiles at the
screen. The longer a shopper smiles at
the screen, the more the mug fills with
beer. It's an example of how eyeQ has embedded technology into its screens that detects a shopper's emotion. It is
one trick of many in the touchscreen's toolkit; others include
the ability to track how attentive a shopper might be, customize messaging to a shopper's age and gender, and dwell
time measurement. At the recent National Retail Federation
show in New York, eyeQ demonstrated its technology in the
Samsung booth. Before that, they exhibited at the Shopper
Marketing Conference & Expo.

6 Rx Networks, Vancouver, Canada, has developed a
suite of hardware and software products that they call
Fathom. It puts beacons into a proximity network that
helps manage and track them, including battery power or if they are lost. When issues arise with a beacon,
alerts are triggered and delivered over the Fathom
cloud-based control panel in real time. In addition to
managing the beacons, Fathom can learn data such as
the most popular aisles in a store and how consumers
are interacting with beacons.
