ratings and reviews, are a very important part
of our content.
So Kroger will no longer be competing
only with Walmart and Target; they'll all be
competing with ABC, NBC, FOX, Yahoo, AOL,
Meredith ... they will become publishers. So
we hired a media company, Zenith, to help us
with what we call "shopper media" - people
that work with WMX and Amazon. That was a
big bet we made and we jumped in.
What's it like working with Amazon?
BERGSMA: Amazon is the biggest product
search engine in the world, so search is big
for us in that space. Banner ads are big too,
and they can lead to our websites or lead to
a coupon, depending upon our joint objectives. We have videos on Amazon, and some
of the best-in-class product pages.
Amazon is way ahead of the industry with
ideas like "Subscribe & Save," which is a perfect capability for a category like toilet paper - who doesn't need to buy toilet paper
on a regular basis? We've been very good at
leveraging ratings and reviews, which is the
modern "word of mouth;" people trust a review from Amazon more than our ads. The
only thing that's missing is the traditional instore experience, right? Well, when you order
Brawny on Amazon, the shipping case that's
delivered to your doorstep has the Brawny giant printed on it. And there are more ideas to
come, but [laughing] I'm not going to inform
my competitors.
You seem to be shaking up your staff as well.
BERGSMA: The people we hire now do not
have traditional shopper marketing back52

grounds. Laura Knebusch, for example, was
actually running our Dixie brand; Russ Ferrara
has a career on the digital side of shopper
and knows a lot about media. When we hire
for shopper marketing roles, we look in the
digital space first. There's going to be a whole
new breed of shopper marketers and maybe
we should change the name to signify that.
It sounds like "Shopper Marketing 2.0" or
something.
BERGSMA: Since we rebooted internally, a lot
of people now refer to it as "the new shopper marketing," and also as "shopper media
marketing." We still call it shopper marketing
[to avoid confusion with customers] but we
