change is one of our guiding principles, and
we use terms like "experimental discovery"
and "creative destruction." We have a firm
belief that if you do not innovate, it will catch
up with you. And that's true across all of Koch
Industries but especially in CPG.
You now handle an array of paper product
brands, including Angel Soft, Brawny,
Dixie, Sparkle, Quilted Northern and
Vanity Fair. What is the competitive
landscape you face?
BERGSMA: There are four main competitors in
the categories we operate, especially tissue and

towel: Procter & Gamble, Unilever, private label
and us. All four have a lot of strengths in many
areas, but they are not all overlapping. We had
to identify those areas where we could be competitive. You can't outperform private label in
distribution shelving because the retailer-owners own the shelf; you can't out-spend Procter
because they're just astronomical; so you have
to be better, smarter and often faster.
We believe that shopper marketing, done
in a different way, can create a competitive
advantage. It has worked in some areas and
not in others, depending on the brand and
also the retailer.
