B

arry Roberts, director, retail shopper solutions, Colgate-Palmolive, has been
selected for induction into the Path to Purchase Institute/Shopper Marketing
Hall of Fame for 2016. Roberts, along with Douwe Bergsma, chief marketing
officer, Georgia-Pacific, and Tony Dunning, executive vice president, customer
development, Jack Link's, will be honored at the Institute's 23rd annual induction
ceremony, held in conjunction with the Shopper Marketing Effie Celebration, on
Wednesday, March 16, in New York.
Roberts, whose father was an engineering professor and mother was a bookkeeper,
grew up in Southampton, a port city of about 250,000 on the south coast of England
known as the embarkation point for both the Mayflower and the Titanic.
In his teens, he began working at a small stationery supply store and then moved on
to bigger retail chains, restocking shelves and manning the counters. Eventually, he
ended up running a store's record department, which dovetailed nicely with his other
passions, DJ'ing at discos and weddings, and photographing racing pigeons.
He majored in business studies and marketing at Oxford Brookes University, spending
the first two years in an academic course load and then a year working at CC Soft
Drinks, a company based just south of London that was in the process of being
acquired by Coca-Cola Co. Roberts sat down with Shopper Marketing editorial director
Bill Schober in January at Colgate-Palmolive's headquarters in New York.
