success. The surprise is that retailers are finally
ready to help them. Even Walmart, which still
opened on Thanksgiving evening to stage
exclusive in-store deals, made most of its holiday specials available online that morning.
And it spent much of November promoting
"Pre-Black Friday" offers.
This type of smarter response to e-commerce among traditional retailers is what
made the symposium hosted by the Path
to Purchase Institute last month (see page
68) so enlightening for me. What was pretty
obvious across the day's numerous presentations is that e-commerce is only a threat to
traditional retailers if they choose not to embrace it. In fact, e-commerce provides a way
for smart retailers to not only stave off shopper defection but also to win back some of
the share of wallet they've lost over the years
to competing brick-and-mortar channels.
How? By addressing shopper wants and
needs. ShopRite now views its physical locations as "fulfillment centers" rather than just
stores because they're being used to service
a steadily growing number of customers who
order online either for home delivery or curb-

side pickup. "E-commerce is a tool,
not a channel," said Cheryl Williams, the East Coast grocer's vice
president of digital commerce and
innovation, while speaking at the
symposium. "It's the right thing to
do. You just have to figure out the
right way to do it."
Chief among those "right" ways
is to let your customers dictate the shopping
experience that you give them. Otherwise,
they'll probably find someone else who will.
Making them shop on Black Friday for onetime-only deals might deliver immediate
sales, but it's probably not building long-term
shopper loyalty - especially since the transparency provided by e-commerce makes it
fairly easy to understand that many of those
Black Friday deals aren't all that amazing if
you're willing to hunt around a little bit.
Our family's perspective on Black Friday actually began changing a few years ago when I
very nearly averted a Thanksgiving-night trip
to Walmart to buy an Xbox 360 bundle by
finding a pretty similar deal one week earlier
- on Walmart.com, no less.
My wife eventually found a few other reasons to go that year. But this year, she didn't
